O'Day 22 Owner's Manual

I've searched the web for years but was never able to find a legible Oday 22 owner's manual. There are a few sites that want to sell you a copy but I refuse to pay for something that should be free. Thanks to a blog follower from Tampa, FL we now have legible copy with a little zoom manipulation.

I've uploaded it to my Google docs here

If anyone has a better copy they would like to share or have any other useful Oday 22 information let me know and I'll post it for everyone. I think I'll add a permanent link on the sidebar to this and other important Oday information I have or receive from followers.

The Sailboat Repair Bible

I was cleaning off my workbench today and as I put this away I thought others making repairs might find this useful. This book was instrumental in bringing this old boat back to life, almost 900 pages of illustrations and step by step guides covering every aspect of sailboat repair. If you own an O'day 22 then I'm sure you have things that need to be fixed and this is the ultimate repair manual, check it out!

I purchased my copy of Don Casey's "Sailboat Maintenance Manual" at Amazon.com, clicking the image will take you to their product page.

Splash!

After many late nights and a few surprise repairs I was able to launch the boat yesterday. The weather was cool and overcast which was perfect until the wind picked up in the late afternoon sending rollers into the marina. This made fine tuning the rigging next to impossible so I called it a day and headed home for some celebratory beers and BBQ.

Converting the Suzuki DT8 into a long shaft was more difficult than I anticipated but came together in the end. I picked the best parts from both gearboxes, sandblasted and repainted everything, installed all new bearings and seals and mounted my original power head. The prop now sits below the bottom of the transom and operates noticeably smoother. The motor looks and runs great, I couldn't be happier with the way this turned out.

I totally forgot to take more pictures of the new sail covers, I'll write a separate entry next week after I have more hands on with them. First impressions are good, I made some assumptions and would have done a couple things differently but overall I'm happy considering the price. I will probably have them make up some winch and outboard covers.

I'm excited to get on the water!

Been Awhile...

I sailed twice a week up until I pulled the boat out of the water in December 2011. I had a leak I wanted to fix and I was unsure how much I'd be able to sail in the California winter, in hindsight I would have sailed all winter long. I have really enjoyed this boat and look forward to getting back out there.

We welcomed a little girl into our family last year and the boat took a back seat until things settled down a bit. My son is going to be five this summer and he's anxious to go on the boat again so we've been getting things prepared. I've been busy working on the motor all week and hope to have it finished up soon.

I found a long shaft Suzuki DT8 with a bad motor on EBay and thought I could just transfer my power head. Sounded good in theory but as usual the seller over hyped the condition and the more I tear into it the more parts I need. Galvanic corrosion has made disassembling a real pain and nearly every bolt is frozen. Waiting on some new parts to arrive and should have it finished up next week, having a long shaft is going to make things so much easier.

Still lots to do...

  1. Fix leaking lower gudgeon
  2. Wash main sail
  3. Wash entire boat
  4. Who knows but I know there's more!
I also ordered a main sail cover, jib bag and tiller cover from Diego's Custom Marine . I ran across their eBay store and liked the price of a Sunbrella cover with twist locks made to your dimensions. I'll post some pictures when they come in next week.
